Few people realize that Common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is a non-native invader. This aromatic plant, with button-shaped yellow flowers is expanding along roadsides and through riparian areas in the Central Kootenay. Introduced from Europe as a medicinal herb and insect repellent, this species may be toxic to livestock and humans if it is eaten in large quantities.
Common tansy is a growing concern in the Central Kootenay as it continues to spread. It is particularly dense in the Nelson and Slocan Valley areas. Plants can be pulled, or mowed regularly to prevent seed spread.
