Policeman's helment (Impatiens glandulifera) is an escaped garden ornamental that is spreading throughout the Central Kootenay. Once it "hops the garden fence", this species invades natural habitats, particularly riparian areas such as wetlands, river edges, and stream banks.
Growing up to 2 meters tall, this plant has pink flowers that are shaped much like an English policeman's helmet. Each plant can produce 800 seeds, allowing this species to spread rapidly. Residents are encouraged to remove plants on their property to help control this species.
This annual plant has a shallow roost system so it can easily be pulled. However, since seeds can remain viable for up to 18 months, follow-up treatment for at least two years is required.
