Similar to comfry, hound's tongue is a beautiful plant with purple/pink small flowers arranged in spikes. The broad, eliptical leaves can be up to 30cm long and form a rosette at the base of the plant. The 7mm barbed seeds cling to materials such as clothing, shoes, and animal fur, aiding the spread of this species.
These clinging burrs can stress animals, reduce their ability to eat (if the burrs are around the mouth) and reduce sale value of livestock. As well, hound's tongue contains toxic alkaloids that can be lethal to animals.
Reduce seed spread by clipping the seed stalks or mowing before seed set. The entire plant can be dug, bagged and burned. For chemical options, see the attached link.
