Residents will be doing some hands-on help for the environment on Wednesday, July 27, when they gather at 4-mile to pull Purple Loosestrife.
Organized by the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee, this event will bring community members together to combat one of the most aggressive and ecologically damaging alien invasive plants in the Central Kootenay.
“Purple loosestrife was brought to Canada as a garden ornamental, but hopped the fence to invade native habitat,” explains Juliet Craig, Coordinator for the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee. “This species can quickly take over wetlands, and negatively impact habitat for birds, frogs and other aquatic species.”
By spending an evening pulling and clipping these highly invasive plants, residents will reduce the amount of purple loosestrife, control its spread, and give more room for desirable native plants to grow.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to get outside, spend time with your family and community, and do something positive for the environment”.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Meet at 7pm at the parking lot at 4-mile (outside Blaylocks Estate) north of Nelson. There will be free refreshments and snacks. This event is sponsored by Terasen Gas and Kootenay Wildlife Services, and hosted by the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee.
